Will Ferrell plays an out of work nobody called Andrew Anderson who is told by his mum to go out and get a life for himself and to stop hanging around the house playing video games all day long. When Will Ferrell’s characters older brother Lance Anderson comes into town who he hasn’t seen in 4 years, the mum tells him to be more like his brother Lance, who will be played by Adam Sandler.
Shunted by his family jelousy soon kicks in and Andrew does actually want to do something with his life. He tries to attempt everything Lance does and likes and he fails in a comic way. He tries all of Lance's hobbies and they all go pear shaped and make a fool out of him and he wants to give up. He also goes to various job interviews that are potentially life changing that fails in comical ways.
As the film progresses Andrew is introduced to soon to be sister-in-law, and he starts to take a shine to her. As the film continues on, he soon realises that his rich and successful brother is a nasty man and is very spoilt, spiteful and generally unpleasant. He then tries to win Lances fiancé and make her, his own.
