Brennan Huff and his step brother Dale Doback, both in their 40's when Brennan's mum and Dale's dad marry. The sons still live with the parents so they must now share a room. Initial antipathy threatens the household's peace and the parents' relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job, they think about what they could do and they notice they both have a passion for music which also leads into them having a friendship but more domestic issues evolve.

Dale's dad and Brennan's mum, both want to retire and sail around the world but implications cause them to split. By the end of the film, the two ex-step brothers meet up at a party. There is an issue and the party is over but the two brothers pull together and pull it of. In the end everyone is happy and they create a career for themselves.
